Gulangyu My Hometown
This page displays my second series of traditional 2D arts project, Gulangyu My Hometown, a set of ten pieces of oil painting in decorative style, integrating the aesthetic flavors of stained glasses (similar to what is found in Tiffany Lamps) and of pointillist oil painting. This project has been developed in memory of my childhood dream of becoming an artist. Gulangyu, my birth place, is a small islet off the coast of Amoy/Xiamen, Fujian province in southern China, about 2 sq km (0.77 sq mi) in area. It is home to about 20,000 people and is an internationally known tourist attraction. The only vehicles permitted are small electric buggies and electric service vehicles operated by government authorities. Gulangyu is renowned for its beaches and winding lanes and its varied architecture with different international styles, including British, Japanese, and French. The islet is on China's list of National Scenic Spots. The Arts and Crafts Institute of Fujian, where I worked as a foreign language translator before I came to the United States in 1986, is also located in Gulangyu.
