Egyptian Cartouche
According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, “In Egyptian hieroglyphs, a cartouche (English pronunciation: /kɑːˈtuːʃ) is an oval with a horizontal line at one end, indicating that the text enclosed is a royal name, coming into use during the beginning of the Fourth Dynasty under Pharaoh Sneferu. While the cartouche is usually vertical with a horizontal line, it is sometimes horizontal if it makes the name fit better, with a vertical line on the left. […] The oval surrounding their name was meant to protect them from evil spirits in life and after death. The cartouche has become a symbol representing good luck and protection from evil. Egyptians believed that one who had their name recorded somewhere would not disappear after death.” In this project created as an assignment for the Art 601Lettering II course (Fall 2013taught by Professor Michael Owens at East Los Angeles College, examples of Egyptian cartouches and other forms of arts and design have been studied; and new cartouches bearing the name of the student in ancient Egyptian alphabet have been created and printed on sheets of Egyptian papyrus paper.
Figure L-1C. The three workable solutions. In this image, cartouches created in Illustrator and saved as EPS files have been opened in Photoshop and integrated with the image of the marble background; and Layer Styles (Stroke and Shadow) have been applied. Typeface Design with Adobe Illustrator
Fonts could be created directly in Fontographer program. However, it is more convenient to create the individual letters in Adobe Illustrator, save the files in Illustrator 8 EPS format, and import the vector images of the letters into Fontographer to create font sets.
About fonts ...
Fonts could be divided into two basic categories, i.e., serif and san serif. Fonts are basically made of straight and curved line strokes; and they could appear as either “classic” or “modern.” In this project, a “Machine Age” appearance is the aim of design. Arcs, circles and slanted lines as well as a san serif type are used to achieve this aim. |
Word of Caution
When designing the typefaces in Adobe Illustrator, the shapes of letters must be within the edges of the Artboards in order for the EPS files to be imported into Fontographer file properly.
