The traditional art coursed that Edward Locke have taken at American colleges and universities cover oil, acrylic, watercolor and gouache paintings, scenic and mural painting, charcoal, graphite pencil and color pencil drawings, ceramics and sculpture. The also cover a variety of applications such as character design, illustration, graphic design, and storyboards; and the software programs used include a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphic art, animation, video editing and website design software programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, AfterEffects, Dreanweaver, Fontographer, 3ds MAX, Maya, Coral Painter and Bryce. In terms of art materials used, Edward Locke tries to integrate "regular" materials (i.e., materials purchased from art supply stores) with "non-conventional" media (twigs, jewelry materials, thumbnails). In terms of tools used, he tries to integrate "regular" tools (painting brushes and palette knives) with "non-conventional" tools (kitchen utensils and hair combs). In terms of styles, he tries to integrate the strengths of a variety of styles so as to establish his own unique style. These styles include photo-realism, impressionism, symbolism, abstract expressionism, surrealism and others. Edward Locke works hard to become a multi-media and multi-stylistic modern artist, integrating traditions with modernity, Asian with European, advancing with the passage of the time, with the motto of "Creativity Forever!" In terms of style, the artists with greatest impact on Edward Locke's artistic creation include Vincent Van Gough, Georges Seurat, Mary Cassatt, Patricia Tobacco Forester, Christine Frerichs, and Stan Lee.

The Mayor Tom Bradley Art Competition 2018
Honorable Mention
Artworks with Topics of Social Progress and International Peace
in the United States and China
Mr. Edward Locke believes in the philosophy of "art for the sake of art", but also firmly believes that artists should firmly support the cause of international peace, social progress and charity. In addition to having inherent aesthetic value in form, artistic works should also reflect the people's ideal for a better life and should support social, economic, scientific and technological progress, with deep respect for the cultural values, norms and customs, and traditions of the greatest majority of people. The following works show Mr. Edward Locke's idea of combining aesthetic taste with humanistic concern.
This painting, titled The Portrait of the United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, is the central piece in the planned Multimedia Painting Series titled The Life and Legacy of the United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. President Roosevelt (born on January 30, 1882, and died on April 12, 1945) was the only president to be re-elected for four consecutive terms in American history. He is also recognized by mainstream historians as one of the three greatest presidents (the founding father, President George Washington, and President Abraham Lincoln, who liberated slaves). President Roosevelt's great contributions to the United States and the peoples of the world include the consolidation of economic order, the establishment of social security system, the construction of public facilities, the victory of the anti-fascist war, and the establishment of the United Nations and a series of other international institutions.

During President Roosevelt's terms of office, he made many beneficial contributions to the cause of Chinese people's anti-Japanese resistance for national salvation. Media used in this painting include liquid and normal acrylic paint, and three-dimensional fabric paint. Liquid acrylic pigments form interesting streamlined organic patterns in the background. Three-dimensional fabric paint strokes form vivid texture and three-dimensional effect of "bas-relief" on parts of the face of the character. They are also the main medium used in the portrait. Fabric paint strokes are also used to add three-dimensional touch to some parts of the background. Finally, normal acrylic paint strokes are used to modify tones or shapes locally. The three-dimensional fabric paint used in this work include neon, fluorescent, pearlescent, iridiscent, glitter, metallic and other types, so President Roosevelt's face shines brilliantly, even in the dark room!
This multimedia portrait titled The Life and Legacy of the Mayor Tom Bradley; and it commemorates the centennial of Mayor Tom Bradley, a progressive political leader of the Democratic Party of African descent who has been elected as the Mayor of Los Angeles for five consecutive terms (go to https://suniseacreation.weebly.com/acrylic-painting.html for details). It is composed of 10 foreground paintings and three background paintings plus three transparent plastic plates, and was completed in the first half of 2018. The acrylic paintings on the square canvasses include the portrait of Mayor Bradley and the cabins where impoverished black farmers lived in the Southern States of the United States in the last century, the Los Angeles City Hall, the site of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and Los Angeles Metro Red Line Vermont/Santa Monica Station, with the decorative roof at its entrance and the landmark building of Tom Bradley International Airport (abbreviated as LAX). The five-pointed wood board depicts the Reverend Martin Luther King, a progressive political leader of the Democratic Party from the African-American descent, a prominent leader of the Civil Rights Movement and the Anti-Vietnam War Peace Movement. The petal-shaped wood board depicts Mrs. Ethel Bradley, the wife of Mayor Bradley. Former US Secretary of State, Mrs. Hillary Clinton, quoted the Founding Father of Modern China, Chairman Mao Zedong's motto "Women can hold up half the sky" in her speech on Women's Rights on March 4, 1999 on the United Nations International Women's Day, but she made a small change to read "Women hold up half the sky". The glorious circular decorative frame in the upper right corner belongs to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), an organization that fights racial discrimination and strives for equal rights for minorities in the United States. The rainbow beneath it, cut from transparent plastic sheets, symbolizes the National Rainbow Coalition, one of the most influential progressive groups in the Democratic Party of the United States. The above works use two kinds of acrylic pigments. First, the liquid acrylic paints are poured onto the canvas and the natural flowing "abstract" pattern is formed by the shaking motion of the canvas with both hands. Then, along the direction of the pattern, the "figurative" portraits and scenery are created with the free-flowing brush strokes learned from French Impressionist master Vincent Van Gogh; in addition to using regular acrylic paint, acrylic medium is used in local areas of the landscapes. The materials used to make necklaces and other handicraft products, as well as dried twigs and leaves, are glued to the surface of the paintings to form a special effect of "bas-relief". In the upper left corner, on the glass mirror inside the 16-ray ornamental frame, is Adlai Ewing Stevenson II, a progressive Democratic political leader and 1952 presidential candidate. In the 1950s, Joseph Raymond McCarthy, a right-wing Republican politician, incited "anti-Communist hysteria". He fabricated facts arbitrarily in the American government, army, trade unions, academia, accused progressives of being "Communists" or "Soviet spy". He fuelled "Red Scare" (or "White Terror") in most of the political circles. During the dark period when the most of the political figures chose to remain silent, Adlai Ewing Stevenson II stood up bravely and were respected for defending the democratic rights of the people, and were regarded as a hero by many Americans. Mayor Bradley's political career began in his campaign to elect Adlai Stevenson II as the President of the United States in the 1950s, so it can be said that the two men's ideas of governing the country coincide very well. Unlike other components of this multimedia series, Adlai Stevenson's portrait uses a special enamel, which is specially designed to paint on smooth surfaces such as glass and metal. This is the first time that Mr. Edward Locke has used this kind of paint to paint on glass mirrors.

This oil painting, titled The Heaven Lake of the Changbai Mountains, was painted on a bent and deformed wood board used as a table top that had been placed outdoors for a long time facing wind and rain. Mr. Edward Locke sawed the board into three pieces, using a saw specially designed for curve cutting sold by Daiso, a Japanese-American chain store. One of the boards was painted with auspicious clouds , deer, tiger and ginseng with a happy expression, by the Heaven Lake on top of the Changbai Mountain, the sacred place of Manchu ethnic group in Jilin Province, China. This painting will be one of Mr. Edward Locke's ongoing works in the series "Manchuria the Land of Harmony in the Greater China the Beautiful" (https://suniseacreation.weebly.com/manchuria-the-land-of-harmony-in-greater-China-the-beautiful.html).
The creation of this painting, titled "Mona Lisa Twins Hold Half the Sky", consists of three steps: (1) printing the Mona Lisa line art illustration on thick poster paper with plastisol used in screen-printing of shirts (T-shirts) and heating and drying it through a thermo-drying equipment; (2) painting the printed illustration with the same plastisol material of different colors and heat-drying again; and (3) using the three-dimensional fabric paints to create details on the painted poster. The two Mona Lisa on this painting represent the two personalities and social roles of modern women. The one on the right and the peace movement sign inserted in the loving heart below symbolize the traditional virtues or gentle beauty of modern women. The left one has a red eye and blue eye full of fighting spirit and vigilance. Below it is a symbol of the women's liberation movement, which is placed in the loving heart but characterized by a clenches fist. It symbolizes the idea that "women can hold up half the sky" and the spirit of struggling in modern society. This painting is one of the series of eight pieces titled "Mona Lisa the Beautiful". Other works in the series include: (1) Mona Lisa the Sweat and Caring Beauty, (2) Mona Lisa of the Heaven Lake, Changbai Mountains, (3) Mona Lisa with Dragon and Phoenix, (4) Mona Lisa in the Dream World, (5) Mona Lisa the Three Peace-loving Sisters, (6) Mona Lisa The Twins with One Loving Heart and (7) Mona Lisa the Vegan Twins (https://www.vegetarians.com)/ / Suniseacreation.weeble.com/plastisol--fabric-gel-painting.html).
Mr. Edward Locke abides by two important principles in his artistic creation: (1) boldly emancipating the mind in the use of expressive techniques tools, breaking through the boundaries between traditional style and modern style (realism, impressionism or symbolism), between "formal" and "informal" tools or materials, "It does not matter whether the cat is black or white, as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat," integrating Asian and Western styles, combining native and foreign cultural values, and blending harmoniously what are "elite" and "elegant" with what are "folkloric," popular or "grass-root." (2) Sticking to the bottom lines of ethical values of modern civilization, with deep respect for the moral standards and aesthetic values generally accepted by the people in the mainstream society, not catering to the so-called "behavioral art" of low taste and obscenity, not pursuing "strange" and "non-mainstream", and advocating the combination of individual artistic pursuit with the cause of humanistic social progress in order to build a sustainable New World Order with mutual benefits for all, and contributing to the growth of the Community of Human Destiny, with a win-win outcome for all nations. These principles are explained in detail in my Artist Manifesto (https://suniseacreation.weebly.com/my-artist-manifesto.html).

This painting is titled The Smiling Bryce Canyon. The Bryce Canyon is a National Park located in southwestern Utah. Its unique red, orange and white pillars are composed of wind, water and ice erosions in rivers and sedimentary rocks in lake beds, forming a unique natural landscape. This 2-foot-by-3-foot acrylic painting is made in two steps: (1) First, the red, orange, white and other liquid acrylic pigments are poured onto the canvas, the canvas is shaken by hands, and the flowing pigments are marked with a cutlery fork to form a special pattern (the sky basically retains all the texture of the pattern). (2) Painting with normal acrylic pigments, trying to integrate the Van Gogh style Impressionist brush strokes with the texture of the pattern. After personification of the rock pillars in the picture, they all smiled and warmly welcomed the audience. The personified rocks in the center of the picture are embedded with signs of love and peace.
This painting is titled The Happy Cacti of California. Cactus is a common plant in tropical and subtropical arid areas such as southern states of the United States, South America, Africa, South China and Southeast Asia. It grows very fast, has a hard epidermis, is invincible, light-loving, drought-tolerant, and has a strong vitality. It is suitable for growing in neutral and slightly alkaline soils, and can continue to grow even under extreme drought conditions. Usually cultivated as a fence, its stems can be used for medicinal purposes, some kinds of cacti have berries that are sweet and sour. Cactus can absorb carbon dioxide while producing oxygen and fresh air, which is beneficial to human health. This painting uses symbolism to express the progressive idea of peace and freedom pursued by the American people. The cactus in the middle constitutes a symbol of the peace movement, and the cactus in the upper right constitutes a symbol of the women's liberation movement. This 2-foot-by-3-foot multimedia acrylic painting is made in three steps: (1) First, the liquid acrylic pigments of various colors are poured onto the canvas, the canvas is shaken by hand, and the flowing pigments are marked with a cutlery fork to form a special pattern (the sky basically retains all the texture of the pattern). (2) Use normal acrylic paint to draw the basic shape and tone of cactus and other plants, and try to integrate the Vincent Van Gogh style Impressionist strokes with the texture of the pattern. (3) Create details with Krafty Kids 3D Fabric Paints. After anthropomorphic treatment, the sun in the sky smiled and warmly welcomed the audience. This work uses a variety of three-dimensional fabric paints, including neon, fluorescent, pearlescent, iridiscent, glitter, metallic and others, so the whole picture shines brilliantly, even in the darkroom.
Ideation sketches for the Trade Peace logo design (ballpoint pen and color pencils)
|
The design of this logo has been completed on Sunday, November 18, 2018, at 4:14:29PM. This logo combines the symbols of U.S. dollar sign, of Chinese Renminbi Yuan, the peace sign and the “approximately equal” mathematics sign to express the idea that the economic interests of the peoples of the United States and China are closely integrated and inseparable, that there shall be absolutely no winner in the Trade War, that both countries need to return to rationality, to make mutual concessions, to seek mutual benefits, and to achieve a trade peace satisfactory to both countries as soon as possible; and that this is the only correct option. It is believed that the United States and China will eventually achieve the goal of trade balance on the basis of mutual benefit under a win-win arrangement. The visual effect of the text on the design at the top is more "free and unrestrained", and the visual effect of the text on the design at the bottom is more "business-like". Mr. Edward Locke does hereby dedicate the TradePeace logo to the public and let it enter the "public domain" in terms of "intellectual property". American and Chinese civic groups and individuals who support the end of the "trade war" between China and the United States and a return to rationality are welcome to freely use this logo. The Adobe Illustrator Document for TradePeace logo design attached under the ideation sketches could be downloaded.
Celebrate President Trump's meeting with President Xi Jinping on December 1, 2018 to reach an agreement to suspend the "Trade War!"
Fight for trade peace and maintain world stability,
for a win-win arrangement for both United States and China, and
for a win-win arrangement for all countries in the world!
The TradePeace logo personified into a cactus plant (markers and color pencils).
This 2-foot-by-2-foot oil painting, titled The Spirit of the Aboriginals and the Beautiful Ali Mountain, uses symbolism to depict the scenery of the Ali Mountain in Taiwan, China, and integrates the image of a beautiful girl as a symbol of the Spirit of the Ali Mountain with the mountain scene. The lilies and strawberries in front of the mountain symbolize the sacrifices made by the indigenous people of Taiwan, in the dark years of Japanese colonial rule and Kuomintang's "white terror," to strive for equal rights and social progress. Sunflower symbolizes the liberation of Taiwan by the naval divisions of the Qing Empire led by General Shi Lang, the abolition of the tyranny of the Ming Dynasty's Zheng Chenggong's warlord regime over the indigenous peoples, and the incorporation of the Beautiful Island into the territory of China. The happy smile symbolizes that the people of all ethnic groups in Taiwan, China, will win the final victory for ethnic and racial equality, human rights, freedom and social justice. They are not afraid of sacrifice. "Whoever laughs the last is the best to laugh." The colorful clouds symbolize the end of the night of "white terror." The beautiful island has ushered in the dawn of a new era, a multi-cultural new society with equality among all ethnic and racial groups will emerge, and the Community of Common Destiny for All Ethnic Groups will eventually take shape in Taiwan, China, and become an integral part of the Community of Common Destiny on Both Sides of the Taiwan Strait," and of the Community of Human Destiny". Lotus is the symbol of Buddhism that most people in Taiwan believe in and represents the traditional Chinese culture in Taiwan.
Mr. Edward Locke used his romantic imagination to design fantastic animals and plants (original creatures designed separately with markers and color pencils, Photoshop used for synthesis).
This cartoon, titled The Dialogue Between Elephant and Panda, is about the intricate relationship between the diplomatic and strategic dialogues between China and the United States concerning foreign policy concepts, North Korea's nuclear weapons, trade balance, and Taiwan issue, as well as the "neither-enemy, nor-friend", "partner and competitor" relationship between the two countries (original graphical elements created with markers; Photoshop used for integration and modification).
This cartoon expresses appreciation for the passage of a liberal and enlightened local legislation of banning slaughtering and injuring cats and dogs by the Legislative Chamber of Taiwan, Province of China, on April 11, 2017 through the Amendment to the Animal Protection Law. The extremely uncivilized vice of slaughtering and injuring cats and dogs was once common in Taiwan, Province of China, and was strongly criticized by animal protection advocates in the international community. I hope that this local legislation will be seriously implemented and will not affected by the disputes over the issues of "unification with China" or "independence" between the supporters of the Chinese Nationalist Party in Taiwan (the so-called "Blue Camp") and the supporters of the Progressive and Democratic Party of Taiwan (the so-called "Green Camp"), Province of China. For God's sake, and for the honors of your ancestors, please seriously implement this legislation, dear warriors from both "Blue" and "Green" camps!
Mr. Edward Locke's series of current affairs commentary cartoons titled The Chaotic Phenomenon of Democratic Politics in Taiwan, China, have Been created on the basis of objective neutrality, non-partisanship, non-factionalism, a middle-of-the-road position above the conflict between the "left" and the "right," using the"Marvel" style of expression of American cartoon master Stan Lee to vividly depict the chaotic phenomenon of "democratic politics" in Taiwan, China after the lifting of the "Martial Law".

These two 11-inch by 17-inch posters were designed to celebrate the 2018 Day of the Dead (November 1 and 2). The picture shows the spirits of the "Yiminye" (“义民爷” or the Lords of Righteousness) of the Hakka ethnic group in Taiwan, China. Paying respect to the spirits of the "Yiminye" is an important folk tradition in Taiwan. The original meaning of the Lords of Righteousness refers to the patriotic martyrs who sacrificed their lives to defend their homeland in the wars to maintain national unity and social stability and to resist foreign aggression. Taiwan, China, has set July 20 of the lunar calendar as the the Day of the Lords of Righteousness(义民节)every year, offering sacrifices to the loyal spirits with food and incense. The visual factors in the picture include offerings of fruit and flowers for sacrifice, traditional Hakka dwellings, the Praise Loyalty Kiosk(褒忠亭)and the Temple of the Lords of Righteousness(义民庙)in Jiayi Area(嘉义地区), the handwriting of the Emperor Qianlong in Qing Dynasty(大清乾隆皇帝)that reads Praising the Loyalty("褒忠"), auspicious clouds in the sky, a giant skull symbolizing martyrs and spirits, wings of angels, and mottoes of "Long Live the Community of Human Destiny!" in Chinese and English.
Inherit the Spirit of the Lords of Righteousness of the Hakka People in Taiwan, and Build a Community of Human Destiny Across the Taiwan Strait!
These two self-portraits or illustration, use a variety of painting tools, vegetables, fruits, electronic parts and others to form the features of the portraits with different expressions.

Multimedia Graphic Art
(Traditional Drawings and Paintings, and Digital Paintings) Edward Locke's traditional graphic art works cover various media (oil, watercolor, acrylic, three-dimensional fabric paint, enamel, crayon, oil pastel, charcoal, graphite, and color pencils, etc.). Computer graphic art works are created using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Coral Painter, Bryce, Kai's Power Goo and other software.
I Love California (color pencils), with most of the visual elements taken from the California State Flag.
Character Design
(Dream World and sentient beings) Edward Locke personifies plants and rocks as cartoon characters in many art and packaging designs. Character design in this way is very common in the product packaging design in large food supermarkets in the United States (especially for children as the main target consumers).
Photographic Art
(Products, Animals and Plants, Landscapes, Interviews, Illustrations, etc.) Edward Locke uses a lot of photographic works as materials in his artistic creation and commercial graphic design.
Digital Animation and Video
Edward Locke uses Adobe Flash, AfterEffects, and Premiere software programs in the creation of two-dimensional animation.

Three-Dimensional Arts
(Sculpture, Ceramics and Toys) Edward Locke's traditional three-dimensional art works include ceramics and sculptures (mud, clay, plaster, and recycled materials).
Fundamentals of Design
(Two-Dimensional Composition, three-Dimensional Modeling, Font and Color Harmony) Satisfactory completion of homework assignments in the fundamentals of design is the prerequisite for artistic creation.
Digital Three-Dimensional Modeling
(Animals and Plants and Outdoor Sculpture) and Animation Edward Locke's creation of three-dimensional digital art uses many software programs such as 3ds MAX, Maya, Bryce, and Autoodesk Inventor.
Applied Art
(Illustrations, Storyboards, Advertising Murals) Edward Locke integrates various traditional tools, materials and computer software in the creation of applied art works.
Editorial Cartoon
(Commentary on Current Affairs) Edward Locke's cartoons are deeply influenced by Stan Lee, the great American cartoonist and Father of the Marvel Comics, and criticize problems of social injustice in American society and political chaos in Taiwan. Edward Locke's understanding of modern Chinese history, in addition to what he learned at Shanghai Institute of Foreign Studies in China, is derived from the works of Li Ao, a well-known free-thinker, literary historian and fighter for democratic freedoms in Taiwan, China, and the video program "Li Ao Has a Talk". His understanding of the harmfulness of feudalistic dregs in Chinese traditional culture was deeply influenced by the famous Chinese writer Lu Xun (鲁迅) and the famous Taiwanese writer Bo Yang (柏杨), especially his famous but "politically incorrect" book titled The Ugly Chinese (The Ugly Chinese (丑陋的中国人).

Graphic Design Portfolio
Edward Locke strictly abides by the following three principles, or "Golden Rules," in commercial arts: (1) "without market research, there will be no right to design"; (2) using bold ideas from multiple perspectives to find the best creative plan through comparison and screening, on the basis of comprehensive and sufficient market research; (3) "coming from the market, and returning back to the market." There will be no design behind closed doors without research on existing design style in the market place, no arbitrariness based on "personal will." Edward Locke believes that modern commercial arts should be based on science and rationality. Market research should be done first before actual creative design is started; all personal emotions, cultural factionalism, or influence from stylistic "schools," should be excluded; and the best creative scheme should be chosen to achieve the best visual effect. Displayed below are commercial arts or graphic design works completed by Edward Locke.
This commemorative T-shirt is titled The Community of Human Destiny Commemorative T-Shirt. The purpose of the above design is to commemorate the important epoch-making event of the high-level dialogue between the ruling Communist Party of China and the major political parties from the whole world, from all political and ideological spectrum ("left," "middle-of-the-road," and "right"), held in Beijing, China, from November 30 to December 3, 2017, which reached broad consensus and advocated the construction of a Community of Human Destiny, with the publication of the Beijing Initiative. The sun with 24 rays in the flag symbolizes that the sun will shine 24 hours a day, and never set on five continents, and that people of all countries shall work together for social progress and human happiness, ideals that shall shine forever.
|
The red triangle composed of roses represents the sunrise at dawn, which is extremely auspicious. The image of Thomas Moore, a great political leader in the history of Great Britain, is featured inside the 24-ray sun. Thomas Moore has been canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1935 as a Martyr of the Roman Catholic Church, and declared by Pope John Paul II in 2000 as "the Heavenly Patron of Statesmen and Politicians" in 2000). He is an advocate of the innovative, harmonious and progressive social management concept of "utopia," an ideal society. His ideas have so far been a great and valuable source of reference and inspiration for the great cause of constructing a world-wide Community of Human Destiny. Thomas Moore is a human hero that can be accepted and respected by the enlightened people of all political forces in modern society. The upper right corner is the blue sky, including the moon and a vehicle for space exploration, which symbolizes the ambition of human beings to explore the mystery of the universe; the lower right corner is the blue ocean, in which there is a swimming turtle, which symbolizes the ambition of human beings to explore marine resources; the white and green forward triangular waveform symbolizes the continuous advance of the causes of human progress. On the commemorative T-shirt are the motto of "Long Live the Community of Human Destiny" and the phrases "Able to Explore the Space" and "Able to Explore the Ocean." The flag on the commemorative T-shirt, titled The Flag of the New Eight Banners Website, was created by Edward Locke during his study and work in the College of Education of the University of Georgia in 2009.
