Figure LP-1. These glowing light sticks have been purchased from local 99-cent or 1-dollar stores. In the darkroom, the digital camera has been set to a long exposure lasting 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes; the glowing light sticks were hand-held and moved inside the dark room to produce tracks of light. This process could be performed by one person at a time or several persons simultaneously; and it could be repeated several times to produce enough raw materials for working in Photoshop.

About light painting ...
According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, "Light painting is is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera. The term light painting also encompasses images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources. Light Painting Photography can be traced back to the year 1914 when Frank Gilbreth, along with his wife Lillian Moller Gilbreth, used small lights and the open shutter of a camera to track the motion of manufacturing and clerical workers. Man Ray, in his 1935 series "Space Writing," was the first known art photographer to use the technique and Barbara Morgan began making light paintings in 1940." |
