Sunlight Island
This page displays the Sunlight Island, a 3D digital animation video created in Autodesk 3ds MAX program. Some of the images from this video have been applied to the design of the shopping bag for the Sunlight Island Gift store. The inspiration for this project came from the beautiful scenery of Gulangyu, a small one-kilometer diameter car-free islet called Gulangyu (鼓浪屿, or the Islet of Drumming Waves in Mandarin), a district of the City of Xiamen (厦门市or Amoy, an island), in the Province of Fujian, China. The Islet is famous for its Victorian-era style architecture and for hosting China’s only piano museum, giving it the nickname of “The Town of Pianos” (鋼琴之鄉) or “The Island of Music” (音樂之島). In the 17th Century, Zheng Chenggong (郑成功, 1624-1662), a Ming Dynasty military leader born in Hirado, Japan to the Chinese merchant/pirate Zheng Zhilong and his Japanese wife, used the Islet as a base to train his troupes for rebellion against the Government of the Great Qing Manchu Empire of China, and for the seizure of Taiwan from the Dutch colonialists. After the Manchu and Chinese Eight Banners Coalition Armies defeated Zheng’s troupes on the Mainland of China, Zheng lead his people to Taiwan in 1661, drove out the Dutch and established the first Chinese state in Taiwan. In the late years of Manchu Government, Gulangyu became an International Settlement in 1903 and 13 countries including Great Britain, France and Japan established consulates, churches, and hospitals. Japanese occupation of the island began in 1942, and lasted until the end of World War II. Gulangyu was taken over by the People’s Liberation Army of China in October 1949.
